Una May Olomalaiye
Una May Olomolaiye is a British vocalist, composer, choir leader and community music facilitator whose work celebrates connection, cultural exchange and the joy of shared singing.
Born in Leeds to Jamaican parents, her musical roots lie in the Black church and gospel tradition, shaping a style that blends gospel, jazz, African and world music. She has performed nationally and internationally, collaborated with leading British jazz musicians, and was a member of the acclaimed female a cappella group Black Voices.
Una May is best known for her inspiring work with community choirs and vocal workshops. She is Musical Director of WorldSong in Coventry and has led choirs across Leicester and Wales, teaching in a welcoming, inclusive way — often by ear — and drawing on songs from Africa and the African diaspora.
Her music has featured on BBC Radio 3, including original work for an audio drama linked to Coventry UK City of Culture, and she was a commissioned composer for the BLM Black Composers Project, creating songs now sung by choirs across the UK and beyond.
At the heart of her work is a belief in the transformative power of collective singing. Described as “an exuberant musical force,” she creates joyful singing spaces where voices shine, confidence grows, and community is renewed through song.
